Is learning Swedish on your bucket list? Put it off no longer! Gretchen Esping will be offering beginning Swedish in the Swedish Heritage Room at the Lindsborg Community Library beginning Monday, September 18, 2017, from 6:00-8:00 p.m.
The course will proceed in a very natural way, just as a child first learns to make sounds, then to speak, followed by reading and writing. Each evening will also include a fika paus (coffee break) halfway through the evening. There will also be a bit of homework each week as well!
Gretchen was born and raised in Lindsborg, and she and her family lived in Sweden for five years, from 1984-1989. Upon her arrival in Umea, Sweden, Gretchen enrolled in a nine-month intensive total immersion course in Swedish offered byKursverkssamhetenfor immigrants who had already been at university in their home country. This course included three hours of course work each morning and four hours of homework each afternoon. The course was designed to allow students with previous university experience to take the university entrance examination in Swedish, which included reading, writing and speaking in their specific area of study.
While in Sweden Gretchen translated a 300-page book from Swedish to English on environmental waste incineration. Today she does translations from Swedish to English, has taught Beginning Swedish at Bethany College, has taught individual students privately and has worked as an elementary Swedish instructor through Language Trainers Corporation, Listen and Learn Program of New York City.
The course offered here will cost $5 per evening. That money will cover the cost of handout materials andfika. To begin you will need a loose-leaf notebook, notebook paper and a pencil. If you have a good Swedish/English, English/Swedish Dictionary you will find that helpful as well. At this time, there is not a selected text; rather, the student will build their own text from their notes and the handouts.
