At least McPherson College’s men’s soccer team knows where it stands nationally.
The Bulldogs, who were ranked just outside of the Top 25 in the NAIA preseason poll, kicked off their season here Saturday by hosting No. 8-ranked MidAmerica Nazarene and the result was a 4-1 loss.
The game was tied at 1-all — with Mac’s goal on a PK by Jared Robbins — before the Pioneers scored two goals in the final 10 minutes of the first half.
The Pioneers scored the game’s only goal in the second half and pretty much controlled the action with a 13-4 advantage in shots.
Mac coach Doug Quint, while unhappy with the final score, liked what his team did for most of the game.
“I was really pleased with how we played today for 70 minutes," Quint said. "There were some really positive moments for us in this young season. The bottom line is we fell asleep for 20 minutes and they punished us. That is what good teams do. MNU is a Top-10 side for a reason and during that time they sure did show it. It was a tough stretch for us between the 34th and 56th minutes. Outside of that stretch for us, there are some really good things to build on."
The Bulldogs have a week to fix their mistakes as they are off until Saturday when they play at Presentation College in Aberdeen, S.D. Mac will also play the University of Providence of Montana on Monday the 4th.
