SALINA — It was a cloudburst of touchdowns for McPherson’s eighth-grade football team in its 2017 debut Thursday against Salina South.
The Bullpups put 58 points on the board and defeated South 58-36 in a wild shootout.
“These young men came out and played exactly how we have been telling them they were capable for the last year,” MMS coach TJ Jackson said. “This was an absolute full team effort. As coaches we really wanted to point out the fact that on Monday we had two spots on our O-line that needed filled for various reasons and two of our players were willing and ready to move from spots they were doing well at, and stepped in and dominated at their positions. Curtis Landrum and Javon Mattox stepped in for us and we can honestly say without them, these numbers are not possible.
“Our receivers were outstanding, Trey Buckbee, Collin Pearson, Gus Ruddle and Javon Dukes,” Jackson said. “Aiden Hoover played some of the best quarterback I have ever seen from a middle school quarterback. He completed 80 percent of his passes, with 0 interceptions, for 409 yards and then rushed for 105 yards.”
A scoring summary:
• Hoover to Buckbee, 24 yards
• Hoover 18-yard run (Hoover run for 2)
