VALLEY CENTER — McPherson High’s JV boys soccer team competed in a one-day tournament hosted by Valley Center on Saturday, taking second place.
The Bullpups opened with a 1-1 tie with Valley Center, then won after a lengthy PK shootout that went to the ninth attempt.
Cody Achilles scored the MHS goal in regulation and Conner Glazner knocked in what was finally the winner as MHS made 8 of 9 PK attempts.
“Conner Glazner may be the smallest player on the field, but he plays absolutely huge in the goal,” MHS coach Chris Adrian said. “He was the man of the match when the junior varsity team opened the season against Newton on Tuesday and he came up huge again during the shootout. The shootout went back-and-forth all the way to the ninth kicker and that is when Valley Center missed a PK giving the team the opportunity to win the game.”
MHS then played Garden City for the title. The Bullpups, who had a busy first week, wound up losing a 2-0 decision.
“They are a really talented team and would give most varsity teams a run for their money,” Adrian said. “The team played really organized and tough, shutting out Garden City in the first half. Unfortunately the fatigue of playing four games in five days began to show in the second half and the players began to get tired. Garden City scored two goals and we simply ran out of gas. There were definitely more positives taken away from this tournament than negatives. This team works really hard for each other and shows a lot of grit and perseverance.”
MHS is now 2-1-1 on the season.
