The home opener for the McPherson College women’s soccer team was a successful one on Saturday afternoon as the Bulldogs blanked future KCAC school Avila University 2-0 at The Kennel.
“The team was very excited about their first home game and it showed during the first 10 minutes of the half,” said McPherson coach Mark Olson, whose team is now 2-1 on the year. “After we settled down we began connecting passes and working the ball up the field. I was impressed with our back line and young goal keeper (Christie Silber). It was good to see our team take what we have worked on since returning from Denver and be able to implement those sessions into the game. It helped create many opportunities for our flanks and strikers to get behind the defense and create scoring chances. I love how this team is really coming together on the field and everyone is understanding their role and contributing in a positive way.”
Brooke Russell and Ana Guerrero scored goals for the Bulldogs and Silber came up with 5 saves in goal. Peyton Morris and Dina DereVartanian were credited with assists.
The first goal came right before the half to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead and Guerrero’s goal came with 14 minutes to go. The Bulldogs actually were outshot 14-13 but Silber was strong between the pipes.
Mac is off until Sept. 14 when it hosts Randall University.
