There will be plenty of soccer teams with strong traditions on hand today when McPherson High begins competition in the Maize South Invitational.
The Bullpups open with Wichita Classical at 3:30 p.m.
“This is a team we have not played before, but they have some individual talent on their side so we have got to come out focused and play hard as a team,” MHS coach Chris Adrian said.
MHS opened its season last week with a double-overtime loss to Newton before bouncing back to defeat Rose Hill.
“I thought we had a solid first week of the season going 1-1 and learned a lot about ourselves in those games and what we need to work on,” Adrian said.
The Bullpups will be looking to defend the title they won in this event last year.
“Last year during this tournament, we surprised a lot of people by winning it all which means this time around, the target is on our backs,” Adrian said. “The tournament is packed with some really strong teams. Valley Center, Salina South, Maize South and Andover are all really good teams.”
The semifinals are scheduled for Thursday, with the final day of competition scheduled on Saturday.
