GYPSUM — It continues to be a learning experience for the youthful Smoky Valley volleyball team.
The Vikings, who graduated most of their starters from last year’s 27-win team, took eighth place in a very strong Southeast of Saline Tournament on Saturday.
The Vikings gave longtime power Hillsboro a good match before losing in straight sets (27-29, 15-25).
In other pool play, the Vikes lost to Southeast of Saline (16-25, 21-25) and Beloit (11-25, 13-25).
In bracket play, the Vikings gave 5A school Salina South a competitive seventh-place match before losing two 20-25 decisions.
Concordia outlasted Emporia in three sets for the championship. Abilene defeated Southeast of Saline for third and Beloit shaded Hillsboro for fifth.
