DERBY — McPherson’s seventh-grade football team held off a late charge by Derby for a 14-6 victory on Thursday.
The success improved MMS to 3-0 on the season.
“This was a tough game for our guys,” Bullpup coach Brandt Busse said. “We made some mistakes and had to battle through that adversity. The boys came through in the end with a crucial stop on 4th-and-goal. As a coaching staff we are proud of the way our boys battled through the adversity to get the win.”
Jayton Gumm scored MMS’ first touchdown on a 37-yard run and the deciding score was a 25-yard scoring strike from Sam Becker to Mason Miller. Gumm added a 2-point conversion.
“Offensively we did not have staggering numbers this week,” Busse said. “We had some success both running and passing, but could not really get going throughout the game. We had some penalties that really set us back. Defensively, we struggled a little bit more than we have the last couple of games. Fortunately we turned it around in the end.”
Tucker Pelnar had 4 solo tackles to lead the team, one more than Gumm.
