DERBY — McPherson High took only a partial JV tennis team to Derby on Tuesday, but came away with a championship at No. 2 doubles from Jensen Mierkiewicz and Caitlin Faulk.
The duo combined to go 4-0 on the day.
Jacie Myers played No. 1 singles and was 1-3 for sixth.
“For one of our windiest days, 20-plus mph wind, we showed a lot of grit today,” MHS coach Tyler Brown said. “With those kind of conditions you have to just outlast your opponent and keep the ball in play limiting your errors to a minimum. Jensen and Caitlin were the highlight of the day scoring maximum points for the team and having one of the best comebacks of the year. They were down 2-5 in the championship and came all the way back to win 6-5 (2) in a tiebreaker. They should tremendous fight. Even fought off a match point by the other team.”
MHS finished sixth despite its half-team, scoring 10 points. Campus won the meet with 24, with Maize South second with 19.
