DERBY — McPherson’s seventh-grade volleyball team ended its season on Saturday by going 1-2 in pool play of the Pioneer League Tournament.
MMS defeated Salina Lakewood (25-20, 25-14), but lost to Salina South (8-25, 17-25) and Derby (24-26, 19-25).
“We played our best volleyball of the season against Lakewood and South,” MHS coach Shelly Bohme said. “We served the ball well against Lakewood, only missing a total of six for the match. Kelcie Kynaston, Aimee LeBlanc, Kelcy Bergstrom and Braelynn Patterson especially did a fantastic job serving. Even though we lost against South we had some great rallies. We set the ball up and attacked and did a great job covering tips.”
There were other standouts on the day.
“Anna Vogts had some great digs and Emma Stein stepped up and hit the ball, which is something we've been working with her on all season,” Bohme said.
The Bullpups had a chance to have an even better day.
“We were in a good position to win in the first set against Derby, up by 8 at one point and then staying 6-7 points ahead,” Bohme said. “At 23-18, we allowed them to go on 5-point run to tie the game due to mental mistakes and unforced errors. I was proud of the effort in the second set, as we came back from being down 6-10 to being up by one point. I think if we could have pulled out the win in set 1, we'd have had a different outcome in set 2 to force a third set. There were some positives in that match: Bergstrom had some great hits after struggling to get them to fall in the match against South, Jordan Sears and Kynaston served well and Braelynn Patterson made some great passes.”
MMS finished the year 3-16.
“hese girls should be proud of how much they have improved this season. They have gotten better in every aspect of the game, and it has been fun to watch them learn to play together as a team. This group has tremendous potential, and it will be exciting to see them grow into that.
