McPherson High, Smoky Valley, Inman and Hesston will have runners involved on Saturday when state cross country meets are contested in Wamego and Lawrence.
McPherson will be represented in the Class 4A girls’ race in Wamego by sophomore Natalie Hedlund, who was eighth in last week’s regional at Rolling Acres Golf Course.
The Smoky Valley boys qualified as a team in 4A after finishing second at Rolling Acres. They were led by Ryan Heline, who was 10th individually. Other runners for the Vikings are Joshua Peterson, Zach Lott, Ty Miller, Stephen Peterson, Carter Couchman and Logan Bodenheimer.
The Vikings finished behind Hugoton, which had four of the top eight finishers at Rolling Acres and won the 3A title last year. It doesn’t appear the jump to 4A has held it back as it dominated the field.
Also at Wamego, three Inman runners will take part in the Class 2A meet.
The Teutons' Nicholas Martisko is a Top 5 candidate after finishing second in the regional last week. Nathan Bashore also will run for the Teuton boys, while Aishja Miles will compete in the girls' race.
Hesston will be in the 3A meet at Lawrence. While the Swathers didn’t have a full girls team in the regional, it did qualify Hannah Ferguson and Abigayle Weber after they finished seventh and eighth, respectively.
The Hesston boys qualified their entire team after taking third place, just three points out of second. Halstead won the meet, with Kingman outlasting Hesston 114-117.
Johnny Yang led the Swathers by taking eighth. Other Hesston runners are James Peters, Carter Funk, Jeb Carlson, Sam Bartel, Will Bartel and Rhain Isaac.
