ANDOVER — It took a buzzer-beater to hand McPherson’s eighth-grade A-girls their first basketball loss of the year, 34-33 to Andover Central on Thursday.
Peyton Howard had an terrific game in defeat with 23 points.
“A very tight game throughout, we were up 19-18 at the half and the lead kept going back and forth” MMS coach Jay Crawford said. “Neither team could get a lead that was comfortable. We did a much better job getting the ball inside, which was one of our goals going into the game, but we were not able to knock down shots that we have been making in previous games, just one of those nights.”
Crawford gave a lot of credit to Andover Central and how well it played.
“Andover Central had a very good guard, which was much bigger than any of our guards and we did a good job at end of the game getting the ball out and her hands and to make someone else take a shot,” Crawford said. “I could tell when it was shot that is was nice high-arching shot that was spot on right at the buzzer. We just need to continue to grow in these close game situation.”
The B-team was a 21-4 winner behind a balanced attack, led by Sophie Herrera with 5.
“Tonight the B-team had a nice win, they did a much better job of moving the ball and staying calm under pressure while running their sets,” MMS coach Ellie Wingert said. “We still need to rebound better, but this group bounced back from a first loss in our last game. We are going to have to continue to add to our playbook to help us continue to grow.”
