Andover Central outlasted McPherson’s seventh-grade boys’ A-team 31-27 in a highly competitive basketball game here Thursday.
Hunter Alvord led the Bullpups with 13 points.
“I really enjoy coaching this gritty group,” Bullpup coach Eric Burghart said. “They do a fantastic job of leaving everything they have out on the floor. We may have been a little sloppy at times, but after the first quarter our defense really turned up a notch and put us in a much better position to compete. I would love to see us get out and run more after a turnover or a long rebound and get some easier buckets. Credit to their big as he was a tough matchup wherever he was on the court.”
Andover Central also won the B-game, 24-20. Jaytin Gumm topped the Bullpups with 7 points.
“I thought Jaytin Gumm played extremely well tonight,” Burghart said. “He was spent by the third quarter, but continued to battle on both sides of the court. Our set pieces keep looking better and better every game and we continue to get more organized on defense and credit goes to coach (Cody) Cape for his efforts on both fronts. We seem to be one or two plays away from really turning the corner whether that be rebounding, a set piece or an almost steal these boys are very very close and we look forward to the day when we do.”
