SALINA — McPherson seventh-grade A-boys basketball coach Eric Burghart said this loss was on him.
The Bullpups were outlasted 39-37 on Monday by Salina Lakewood despite 11 points by Hunter Alvord and 10 by Mason Miller.
“I set us up for failure tonight,” Burghart said. “We've been doing some really good things in practice, but our complete lack of fundamentals was apparent this evening. Inability to handle the ball, tipped passes, refusing to box out, not helping the helper, throwing the ball away from the ref when he asks for it; these are all things I clearly haven't addressed enough at practice, but certainly will going forward. That's a tough game to go into Christmas with. The break will be a nice time to rest and soul search, but before we get to that we're going to go down to the dungeon, work and try to rekindle some of that fire we seem to have lost.”
The B-team did brighten the day with a 35-28 overtime victory as Jaytin Gumm’s 19 points led the way.
“This team was down 11-22 going into the fourth quarter, but they scratched and clawed their way back into the game,” Burghart said. “I was extremely proud of their poise, attitude and aggressiveness. Joe Brawner was a man possessed tonight. He refused to give up any rebound that was in his vicinity and had active hands on defense. He and the rest of his teammates made this game a lot of fun to coach. (Assistant) Coach (Cody) Cape is doing some really nice things with this group and they give him everything they have.”
Both MMS teams are 3-4.
MMS A (37) — Alvord 11, Miller 10, Feil 9, Backhus 3, Myers 2, Gottwald 2.
MMS B (35) — Gumm 19, Clark 8, Mai 5, Martinez 2, McCloud 1.
