TRUJILLO ALTO, Puerto Rico — Christmas came early for McPherson College’s men’s basketball team.
After enduring a painful 12-game losing streak, the 12th loss coming on a halfcourt shot at the buzzer, the Bulldogs gathered themselves and headed to sunny Puerto Rico.
After winning on Sunday to snap the skid, the Bulldogs made it two straight wins on Monday with an 85-42 rout of University of Puerto Rico at Carolina.
Freshman Fred Watts gave Bulldog fans hope for the future with a dominating 21-point, 11-rebound double-double, making all 7 of his floor shots. Louis Parker III and Jeffrey Oxford had their second straight strong games with 11 and 10 points, respectively, off the bench. Garrett Owen, the 5-8 guard, hustled his way to a career-high 10 rebounds.
Mac led 35-14 at the half before erupting for 50 points in the second half.
“Our defensive effort was outstanding," Mac coach Tim Swartzendruber said. "We didn't shoot well in the first half, but bounced back in the second half. Fred Watts had his best game as a Bulldog, which was great to see. These two wins should give us a boost of confidence when we return from break."
Mac will stay in Puerto Rico today and then leave on Wednesday, as they will take part in a service project.
Next Mac action is Dec. 30 when it plays an exhibition game at Fort Hays State. Next KCAC action is Jan. 8 at Kansas Wesleyan. The Bulldogs are now 3-13 overall.
