Three McPherson College men's soccer players have been named to the 2017 United Soccer Coaches NAIA Men's All-Plains Region second team.
The Bulldogs, who advanced to the KCAC Tournament finals before falling to eventual national semifinalist Oklahoma Wesleyan University, were represented by senior Edward Gomez and juniors Christopher Kelly and Erik Espinoza. All three had previously earned first-team all-league honors from the KCAC's coaches.
Kelly, who also received CoSIDA second-team Academic All-America, started all 19 games for McPherson. He led the team in virtually every offensive category, registering team-highs in points (37), goals (14), assists (9), shots (54), shots on goal (37) and game-winning goals (3). Kelly's 2017 marks rank second on the program's single-season assists list, fourth on the single-season points list and fifth on the single-season goals list.
This season, Kelly ranked fourth among KCAC players in goals, assists and game-winning goals and fifth in points.
After three seasons as a Bulldog, Kelly ranks second on McPherson's career list in assists (24), third in points (77) and fourth in goals (27).
Espinoza — the 2017 KCAC Newcomer of the Year — was solid all season along the back line, but also found opportunities to contribute offensively, scoring four goals including a game-winner. Gomez played in 17 games, ranking fourth on the team in shots (29) while contributing three goals, an assist and a pair of game-winning goals.
