HAYS — McPherson College’s men’s basketball team outscored NCAA Division II Fort Hays State by 5 in the second half on Saturday at Gross Coliseum.
But that was after the Tigers had raced to a 30-point halftime lead, 55-25.
The Bulldogs showed no quit though in the 87-62 loss that doesn’t count toward their regular-season record since it’s considered an exhibition game and it’s a good tuneup for when they return to action on Wednesday playing at Kansas Wesleyan in Salina.
“Fort Hays is very good," Mac coach Tim Swartzendruber said. "I thought we played scared in the first half and weren't aggressive. We stepped it up in the second half though. We need to continue to improve defensively and be ready for Kansas Wesleyan on Wednesday."
Giving away a lot of size, the Bulldogs were forced into 28 3-point attempts, though they did knock down 10. Aaron Bachura led Mac with 16 points and Garrett Owen scored 10. Owen showed a lot of hustle with 7 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals.
McPherson High grad Kyler Kinnamon, the Tigers’ starting point guard, scored 5 points and dished for 3 assists in just 20 minutes of play. His former Bullpup teammate Payton Stephens added 3 points and 5 rebounds in 18 minutes.
It’s all KCAC games the rest of the way for the Bulldogs, who are still looking for their first win in conference play. They are 3-13 overall.
