At long last, McPherson High’s bowling team will open the season on Saturday with a Baker-format tournament at Wichita that includes 25 schools.
“We have had a good week of practice working on learning a new spare system for most of the team,” said Herb Halinski, the only coach in school history since MHS started the program 10 years ago. “We have a lot of young bowlers this year who will be learning our system. They are all excited. The seniors are really helping the younger players out. Some of the boys are really nervous about Saturday, which is good there is no overconfidence.”
For one of the rare times, it’s a rebuilding year for Halinski, whose teams have been among the best in the state every year.
The boys are led by Clayton Ouellette, who is capable of putting up monster numbers, but he’s the only returning senior starter. Other starters back are Matt Stiggins and Taylor Miller. They’ll all be competing on Saturday along with Ben Houston, Jc Becker and Dylan Krehbiel.
The girls have three returning starters in Mayan Groote, Cheyann Williams and Brooke Miller. Also bowling on Saturday will be newcomers Birkley Schwartz, Heidi Allen and Naomy Aguilar as the team is lacking its normal depth.
