EL DORADO — Four meets, four firsts.

Not even a month-long layoff could stop the McPherson High boys swimming team as it now has won four straight meets to begin the season.

The Bullpups finished comfortably ahead of both Maize and Maize South on Saturday to win the El Dorado Invitational. The Bullpups piled up 523 points, while Maize had 438 and Maize South had 403.

“This wasn't our best meet of the year as we didn't have many best times, but we did put some of the swimmers in events they haven’t swam this year just to see how they would do,” MHS coach Matt Morrow said. “We had some more state-qualifying swims this meet also.  Justus Hampton in the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke, Will Powers in the 50 free and 100 fly, Dawson VanGoethem in the 100 breast and Jori VanGoethem in the 100 breast.”

The Bullpups’ 200 medley relay team of Will Powers, Jori VanGoethem, Hampton and Dawson VanGoethem opened the meet with a win and that team is yet to lose a race this year. Powers also had a pair of individual firsts. But in the other events, the Bullpups constantly had Top 3 finishes.

“I've said this before, but we have some quality depth that is really helping us this season,” Morrow said. “This meet we had three swimmers in every individual event and two relays in each relay event. Every swimmer and each relay scored points, which is really a great accomplishment.”

The Bullpups are busy this week with meets on Tuesday at Hutchinson and Thursday at Salina. “We will see some schools we haven’t seen this season in those two meets,” Morrow said.
