McPherson College’s basketball teams make two of their longest road trips of the season this week.
The Bulldogs wrap up the first time through the KCAC schedule on Wednesday by traveling to Leavenworth to take on Saint Mary.
They stay on the road Saturday with another long journey, playing at Oklahoma Wesleyan in Bartlesville.
Game times Wednesday are 6 and 8 p.m., with Saturday’s games starting at 3 and 5 p.m. because of the long trip.
The Mac men are hoping to build momentum off their first KCAC win of the season on Saturday when they outgunned Bethel, 105-99. Mac is now 1-9 in the conference and 4-14 overall.
This week’s opponents will be formidable. Even without four-time All-American Grant Greenberg, who graduated as Kansas’ all-time leading scorer — surpassing KU’s Danny Manning last year — Saint Mary is 6-4 in the KCAC and 8-8 overall.
Oklahoma Wesleyan is 5-5 in the KCAC, 12-6 overall and perhaps the most athletically gifted team in the conference.
The Mac women have been in a free fall after a nice start. They have lost four in a row to drop to 5-5 in the KCAC and 9-8 overall. Shooting has been the problem as the Bulldogs have struggled mightily from the field, especially from 3-point.
Saint Mary also is 5-5 in the KCAC and has one of the conference’s best players in Candy Des Los Reyes. Former McPherson High All-Stater and two-time Gatorade Player of the Year Katelyn Loecker is an assistant coach for the Spires after having graduated last year from Oklahoma State.
On Saturday, the Bulldogs could be stepping into a hornet’s nest as Oklahoma Wesleyan is 7-3 in the KCAC, but still smarting from losing to Mac at the Sport Center. The Eagles are 13-5 overall and just a game behind co-leaders Tabor and Friends.
