HUTCHINSON — McPherson High’s boys swimming team left its competition battling for second place.

The Bullpups swam away from the field on Tuesday in the Hutchinson Invitational, accumulating 407 points. Andover Central and Hutchinson both scored 179 to finish far back in second. There were nine teams in all.

“Didn't swim great times, but they swam well enough to win,” said MHS coach Matt Morrow, whose team now has won all five meets this season. “Take a look at the pattern of the places in the results, we had 1, 4, 7 or 2, 5, 7 or some better in almost every race with both relays in strong point spots.”

The Bullpups again displayed their considerable depth.

“These guys are really stepping up and swimming for the team,” Morrow said. “Times were off, I think, because we are still recovering from a long stretch of practice, trying to get back to what it feels like to race. Looking forward to Salina on Thursday, I'm really hoping for better times there and to get a few more kids in with state qualifications times. We did add one yesterday with Gavin (Soukup) getting his 100 fly state time. I have to give a special mention to Cody Achilles, first-time swimmer, swam his second 500 free of the season and pulled in a ninth-place finish.”

Will Powers won a pair of individual events to lead the Bullpups, while Soukup and Dawson VanGoethem also nabbed single individual golds. MHS added two relay wins.
