MHS girls rout Winfield to move to 16-1

WINFIELD — For a half, it seemed that McPherson High and Winfield's girls were allergic to the paint.

Both teams spent the half on Tuesday casting off 3-pointer after 3-pointer, with 18 of the 33 Bullpup attempts being bombs while Winfield stayed outside by taking 13 of 18 shots from beyond the arc.

There was more of a inside presence in the second half as the never-pushed Bullpups made it 14 triumphs in a row with 69-26 victory.

MHS scored the game's first 11 points and led 37-11 at the half, making 6 of 18 from 3-point during that time.

"I wasn't displeased with our shot selection," MHS coach Chris Strathman said. "There were times we would have liked to have gotten the ball inside more. But the opportunities (for 3s) were there. I also thought our girls did a pretty decent job of offensive rebounding to give us extra possessions."

The win improved MHS to 16-1 with three games left to play, starting with Friday's game at arch-rival Buhler.

MHS' Taylor Robertson scored 30 points in three quarters as she sat out the final period, knocking down 6 of 8 treys. The rest of the scoring was balanced as Strathman filtered in his reserves throughout the game since it was never in doubt. Eleven Bullpups wound up making a scoring mark in the book.

Winfield was led by Emily Randall with 8 points. MHS' airtight defense allowed the Vikings to make just 7 of 45 shots.

Winfield actually played a good first quarter as MHS needed a late run to push it out to 20-8. The Bullpups then turned to their defense the next two quarters as the Vikings missed 22 of 23 attempts over 16 minutes.

"Overall defensively I thought we were pretty good," Strathman said.

In the JV game, the Bullpups needed only two quarters to score 39 points as they were a 39-12 winner as the Vikings were short on numbers so the game was cut short. Claire Yowell put in 12 points to lead MHS.

In the C-team game, MHS’ Grace Pyle scored 19 points in the first quarter and finished with 29 as the Bullpups were a 61-13 winner. Kassidy Beam chipped in with 12 and Emma Malm added 10.
